General Dentistry

The Importance of Regular Check-ups

General dentistry is the cornerstone of a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Regular dental check-ups are not just for addressing problems; they are the most effective way to prevent them from occurring in the first place. At Smileworx, we are here to help you with all your general dental needs, from a thorough examination and professional cleaning to creating a personalised treatment plan to get your teeth looking and feeling their best. We recommend visiting us every six months to a year, allowing us to monitor your oral health, catch potential issues like decay or gum disease in their earliest stages, and provide guidance on maintaining an effective at-home hygiene routine.

What to Expect During Your First Appointment

A Full Examination Explained

A comprehensive dental examination at Smileworx is a multi-faceted process designed to give us a complete picture of your oral health.

Your initial consultation at Smileworx is a comprehensive and unhurried experience. We begin by reviewing all your concerns and aspirations for your smile. We will perform a detailed examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth, using the latest dental technology to gather as much information as possible about your current oral health.

Examination of Diagnostic X-rays (Radiographs)

X-rays are essential for detecting issues not visible to the naked eye. This includes decay between teeth, tumours, cysts, bone loss, and problems below the gum line. X-rays also help us determine tooth and root positions.

Oral Cancer Screening

A vital preventative check. We carefully examine your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and all oral tissues and gums for any signs of oral cancer. Early detection is key to successful treatment.

Gum Disease Evaluation

We check the gums and the bone around your teeth for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease, such as inflammation, bleeding, or pocketing.

Examination of Tooth Decay

Using specialised dental instruments and bright lighting, we will meticulously check all tooth surfaces for any signs of decay (cavities).

Examination of Existing Restorations

We will check your current fillings, crowns, bridges, and other dental work to ensure they are secure, functional, and free of defects.

Your Smile Journey Starts Here

Creating a Fun and Happy Dental Home

We believe that dental health is essential and should start from a very early age. At Smileworx, our paediatric dentistry services are designed to create a fun, happy, and welcoming place for toddlers and children. Dr Amanda Madden’s special talent for making children feel relaxed transforms dental visits into positive adventures. As a mother herself, she understands how to communicate with children in a way that builds trust and eliminates fear. Our goal is to ensure your child looks forward to their visits and grows up with a healthy attitude towards dental care.

General Dentistry: A Positive Start For Amazing Smiles

Preventative Care for Children (Fissure Sealants & Fluoride)

Prevention is the key to a cavity-free childhood. Two of the most effective tools we use are fissure sealants and fluoride treatments.

Fissure Sealants

The chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars) have natural pits and grooves (fissures) where food and bacteria can easily get trapped. Sealants are a thin, protective plastic coating that is painted onto these surfaces, “sealing” out plaque and acid, thereby dramatically reducing the risk of decay. The process is quick, simple, and painless.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria. A professional fluoride application provides an extra layer of protection to help keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy.

Building Healthy Habits for Life

A crucial part of our paediatric care is education. We take the time to teach children how to brush and floss effectively in a way they can understand and enjoy. We empower them to take ownership of their oral health. By partnering with parents and making dental hygiene fun, we help build healthy habits that will protect their smiles for a lifetime.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit around their first birthday, or when their first tooth appears. This initial visit is typically short and informal. It is more of an introduction to the dental environment. We might do a quick “ride” in the dental chair and count their teeth. This early introduction helps to normalise the experience and allows us to provide you with important advice on cleaning your baby’s teeth, teething, and dietary habits to prevent early decay.
